Wansford Station Appeal

The Old Station Building project just got BIGGER. The opportunity has arisen to also purchase the whole of the former goods yard site. This is particularly important as it will safeguard the environs of the station building. It also constitutes the only land level with and parallel to the railway likely to become available. This purchase will be part of the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) bid (see below) THE IMMEDIATE AIM To raise the funds to refurbish the Grade 2 Listed station building, including fees, making secure and safe. A small amount of work has been identified to make the building safe and secure. Complete restoration and fitting out will then be the subject of the HLF bid; (see below).

An HLF application can take twelve months or more and is in at least two parts.  The first part is a preliminary application to ensure the project fits the HLF criteria, is feasible and worthwhile.  Once this hurdle has been successfully passed work continues on the application proper which covers descriptions of the project, surveys, estimates, planning permissions, etc.  At the end of this stage our bid will be assessed against other projects for a share of the HLF budget.
As we intend to purchase the building before submitting our HLF bid it can be used as at least a major part of the ‘match funding’ requirement.

The bid will have two main aims:
The first aim is to cover the full internal and external restoration of the building, including re-creation of the Victorian ticket office.
The building will then have a variety of uses including:
   * Space to display and interpret some of our many museum artefacts.
   * An area for group and community use.
   * Reveal the stories of railway workers and passengers.
   * Develop activities for children and adults.

The second aim of the HLF bid is purchase of the former goods yard and buildings.

Permanent development of the yard is a medium term aspiration, though some outline schemes will be necessary for the bid and to discuss with Huntingdon District Planning Department because of its proximity to several listed buildings.

In the meantime, some temporary uses will be made, such as displays and events in the existing brick buildings and the open areas of the yard.
