‘My dear friends, this is your hour’ – Winston Churchill on VE Day.
When VE Day dawns on 8th May 2020, it will be 75 years since the guns fell silent at the end of the war in Europe. All over Britain, people took to the streets to celebrate the ending of the years of carnage and destruction. It was a time to remember the past and mourn for lost lives, but also a chance to live in hope for the future.
The NVR will be commemorating VE Day with a three-day event starting on Friday 8 May 2020 – this date has been declared a bank holiday by the Government. Wansford Station will be celebrating with live singers, dancing and music to create a street party atmosphere. We encourage visitors to dress up in their best 1940’s outfits and bring dancing shoes to take part in our platform activities throughout the weekend.
We are delighted that LMS locomotive ‘Royal Scot’ will be a special guest throughout the event, and will be hauling passenger trains during the weekend. Celebrate VE Day with the evening ‘Royal Scot Jolly Fisherman’ on Friday 8 May, with music on the platform before departure and a party atmosphere on board as fish and chips are served at your seat in our decorated carriages. The locomotive is attending with thanks to The Royal Scot Locomotive and General Trust
More details and events will be added to the programme over the coming weeks, so please check back here for updates.
