The Nene Valley Railway is a successful heritage railway, which runs along part of the original London and North Western Railway branch line from Northampton to Peterborough. The line runs for 7½ miles through the Nene Valley from Peterborough in the east to Yarwell in the west, with stations along the line at Wansford, Overton (Ferry Meadows), Orton Mere and Peterborough Nene Valley. We use steam and diesel locomotives to run popular, all year round, passenger service ending the year with our Santa Specials in November and December. Throughout the year we also host a series of special events, including steam gala's, diesel weekends, dining & drinks trains, family fun days, Thomas events and much muchmore. We also offer trains for hire for a venue for a celebration party or corporate celebrations. Plus locomotive driving courses for both Steam & Diesel.

Why we need your support

Providing a heritage railway service is an increasingly expensive business, as the cost of restoring locomotives and maintaining railway lines and infrastructure continues to rise. We need your help to ensure the Nene Valley Railway can develop and grow for the future. The costs of some of our planned works illustrate the funds we need to find over the next ten years. All funds raised by the Friends will go towards the completion of our current projects.

Current projects include:

Car park improvements - £10,000
Overhaul of each historic carriage - £15,000
Major overhaul for locomotive 73050
Running costs for Thomas
Wansford Old Station Building Appeal

Donations to our Bookshop are always welcome - during December and January the bookshop is closed - if wishing to make a donation please bring them in March.

Donations can be made in person when you pay us a visit, in one of our donation boxes that are located around our Station or  Via Our Website

Thomas

Thomas returned to Steam in 2016, and is enjoying pulling trains around Wansford on his special days. To keep Thomas in tip top condition he requires frequent repairs and maintenance.

Wansford Old Station Building Appeal

The Old Station Building project just got BIGGER.

Friends of the Nene Valley Railway

The Friends was set up in 2011 to raise funds for the many projects needing to be undertaken but are not big enough to have their own fund raising campaign. During that time it has helped with funding towards a number of projects, including Wansford café, wagon refurbishment, new shed mess hut, children's play area, electrical test facilities, new toilet facilities at Overton, repair and replacement of lineside fencing, purchase of Wansford platform marquee, Derek Crouch overhaul and wheel turning on our BR Mk1 coaches.

We need more help to support projects in the pipeline and new schemes will need help as further modernisation and refurbishment projects get under way. We can only do this work if we have the money, and a small amount donated each month soon builds up into a meaningful sum so that more projects can be helped. Donors will be kept informed of progress through a regular newsletter and if we can generate sufficient new members we plan to hold a "Friends Day" when subscribers will be able to visit parts of the railway not usually made available and some may even enjoy a footplate ride. None of this is possible without your support so please download a standing order form as below and send it to the Friends at the main Wansford office and don't forget to sign the Gift Aid Declaration if you are eligible as this increases the value of your donation by 25%.
