In 1990 a group of people came together to share an extraordinary ambition – to build a brand new Peppercorn A1 Pacific. They formed The A1 Steam Locomotive Trust and, after 19 years of incredible effort, locomotive No 60163 Tornado moved under its own power for the first time in 2008.

The A1s were designed by Arthur H Peppercorn, the last Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER). They were the last in a line of famous express passenger steam locomotives for the East Coast Main Line, which included the Stirling Singles, the Ivatt Atlantics and the Gresley Pacifics.

The East Coast Main Line (ECML) is 393 miles long. The line was built during the 1840s by three railway companies: the North British Railway, the North Eastern Railway, and the Great Northern Railway. In 1923, the Railway Act of 1921 led to their amalgamation to form the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) and the line became its primary route. The LNER competed with the London Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) for long-distance passenger traffic between London and Scotland. The A1 class was designed by Arthur H Peppercorn for the London & North Eastern Railway and 49 were built in 1948/49 by British Railways. 

Named at Doncaster Works on July 21st 1961 before introduction to traffic, D9009 maintained the ‘racehorse’ tradition of the LNER by commemorating the winner of the 1949 Ascot Gold Cup. Based at Finsbury Park in North London, Alycidon was one of eight ‘racehorse’ Deltics stabled there. In May 1981, she moved to York after the closure of Finsbury Park and was one of four Deltics prepared to work a series of farewell rail-tours during their final six months of operation. Her final outing in BR service was on January 2nd 1982 as standby locomotive for the ‘Deltic Scotsman Farewell’.​ Whilst at the NVR D9009 will be appearing as 55013 BLACK WATCH

If you are heading out to see 60163/55013, please remember to follow the rules of the railway and only go where permitted, as the railway will be very busy over the weekend with many trains running. The locomotives can be safely seen in action at our stations. Please do not encroach onto the railway or running lines. The safety of all our customers is paramount, together with the safe running of the trains. Our lineside is clearly marked and fenced off for the safety of everyone.
