In 1997 the TV series 'London's Burning' was filmed at the railway, and an ex-BR Mk2e FO Intercity coach was used for a fire. After everything had been burnt, it was in no state to be restored as a passenger coach. Instead, it has been repurposed as the home of the Nene Valley Model Railway Group, which was formed in 1998. The coach can now be found on Platform 4.
The Model Railway layout is in OO Gauge with a small loop of OO9 Narrow Gauge at one end. It took around 4 years to bring it up to a 'scenic presentable standard'. The Model Railway is still being improved and there is still a lot of scenic work to be done on the layout, although about 99% of the layout is complete. When you take into consideration that some of the buildings, ballast and grass are around 10-14 years old, all of this needs to be improved. Also we often need to replace points and point motors. Like most departments, we welcome donations as they go a long way in helping to maintain and improve the layout. The Model Railway is open most weekends depending on volunteer availability. If you have any questions about the Model Railway, or would like to know when it will be open, or if you are interested in becoming a member or volunteer (we are looking for keen members who can help us run the layout - full training will be given), then all you need to do is become a working member of Nene Valley Railway.
