The Stockton & Darlington Railway opened on September 27, 1825, connecting places, people, communities, and ideas and ultimately transforming the world.

The LNWR was born with the amalgamation in 1846 of several companies, the largest being the Liverpool & Manchester, the Grand Junction Railway, and the London & Birmingham railway. Within twenty years the LNWR network was virtually completed, including what became the West Coast Main Line from Euston to Carlisle. Other towns served included Huddersfield, Warrington, Preston, Oxford, Wansford, Peterborough, and many othersThe LNWR had numerous joint working arrangements, enjoying friendly relations with both the Caledonian Railway and the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway, and later with the Midland Railway.

Engine No.1054, it was built at the Crewe works of the London & North Western Railway in September 1888. It was the 250th example of a total of 300 ‘6-wheels coupled side tank coal engines’ or, as they were more popularly known, Coal Tanks. Built in 1888 the loco is still running at an outstanding 135 years old.
